In my last article, “Exploring the Rise of Eczema in the U.S. From Diet to Environment,” I discussed the many different forms of eczema. This article will explore ways to reverse eczema rather than just treat it. Let’s get started.
To effectively manage eczema, it is crucial to recognize that it often stems from allergies. Identifying the specific allergens, whether they are environmental or food-related, is fundamental to addressing and reversing eczema symptoms. By pinpointing and mitigating these triggers, you can take significant steps toward alleviating the discomfort caused by this condition.
Environmental Factors That Cause Eczema
Mold spores are often overlooked as a trigger for eczema symptoms. Mold is an airborne allergen primarily caused by moisture, condensation, and humidity trapped within the home, place of business, or even a school. During the Autumn season, we typically find mold spores released into the air. The mold can thrive in damp areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms, and on moist clothing. It can also grow in unexpected places, such as a car’s ventilation system, drain pans, and air ducts. There have even been reports of mold growing inside air conditioner units. Some more common places where mold can appear are listed below:
- Walls
- Wooden structures
- Under floorboards or carpets
- Damp basements
- Plaster
- Attics and loft
- Window glass, panes, frames, and track
Contact with mold spores can cause dry, itchy, or scaly skin. It can exacerbate eczema and asthma in a person who already has it. Accordingly, this is why it is essential not to rule out your environment. If you are living in or working in a moldy environment, removing yourself can reverse it or, at the very least, improve your symptoms. Other Airborne Allergens
People who suffer from eczema are often at the mercy of their environment. Airborne allergens and contaminants are all around us. An allergen is usually a harmless substance, such as a protein, that can cause sneezing, itching, and other allergy symptoms in some people and may also be responsible for eczema. Common airborne allergens and contaminants include dust, pollen, cigarette smoke, pet dandruff, dust mites, fumes, gases, vapors, plants, fertilizers, and pesticides. In addition to being a cause of eczema, Airborne allergens can also be responsible for asthma in some people.
While we can do very little about the allergens outside our homes, we can take a few steps to reduce the allergens inside our homes.
- Keep carpets clean. If possible, avoid them; they can harbor dust and dust mites.
- Keep surfaces and hard floors clean at all times, particularly if you keep windows and doors open. Depending upon the severity of the symptoms, it may be best to keep them closed.
- Use an air filter.
- Keep humidity low.
- Keep bedding clean.
- Wash clothes and fabric frequently.
- Change clothes when in from outside.
Other environmental factors also include climatic conditions such as extreme heat and humidity. If conditions are severe enough, relocating may be necessary.
Contact Irritants That Cause Eczema
Contact irritants are substances that can damage the skin’s outer protective layer, causing a nonallergic reaction called contact dermatitis. Some examples of the most common irritants are:
- Alkaline materials such as soaps and detergents, fabric softeners
- Hair and skin care products with fragrances
- Hair dyes
- Long-term exposure to wet diapers
- Rubber gloves
- Acids
- Solvents
- Bleach
- Antiseptic and antibacterials
- Perfumes and preservatives
- Oils used in machines
- Disinfectants
The best solution for your skin is to avoid contact with irritants. Additional methods of protecting sensitive skin include only using fragrance-free and chemical-free hair and body care products and, if possible, fragrance-free laundry detergent.
How To Reverse Eczema
Combating Eczema Through Diet
Medical research shows that 30% of children with moderate-to-severe eczema have a food allergy. 80% of food-induced flares have been attributed to dairy, eggs, wheat, soy, nightshades, and peanuts exposure.
Some medical research also recommends avoiding foods like chocolate, cocoa powder, cashews, shellfish, soy sauce, tofu, and soybeans.
Knowing which foods you might be allergic to is essential. We are all different, so some people may be allergic to blueberries, while others are allergic to cucumbers. If nursing babies have eczema, it is important to consider what the mother is eating. An allergy test may prove beneficial in pinpointing the source of food allergies.
Although changing diets can alleviate allergy symptoms for some, not all allergies are food-related.In these cases, don’t give up hope; you just have to consider other avenues, such as an overgrowth of candida, parasites, or an improperly functioning lymphatic system.
